Background

Yaz® is a prescription birth control pill containing the progestin, drosperinone, and estrogen, ethinyl estradiol. The drug was known in its earlier version as Yasmin® Birth Control, and approved as an oral contraceptive by the FDA in 2001. The drug manufacturer Bayer™, had since aggressively marketed it as a powerful contraceptive with an extremely high success rate in preventing pregnancy.

The drug Yaz® was approved by the FDA in 2006. While it is essentially similar to Yasmin® in composition, the drug has a slightly higher amount of estrogen in its composition. Yaz® and Yasmin Control® are both comparable to Ocella®, another popular oral contraceptive, manufactured and marketed by Barr Laboratories™, a subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceuticals™.

Yaz® is recognized as a popular contraceptive in the market, offering high success rate in the prevention of pregnancy. Its key components, drosperinone and ethinyl estradiol, are essentially designed to alter the lining of the cervix and the uterus, preventing fertilization of the egg by a sperm, and in the rare event that an egg be fertilized, preventing it from attaching to the wall of the uterus.

Aside from preventing pregnancy, drospirenone is also effective in treating symptoms of premenstrual disorders such as exhaustion, low appetite, headaches, nausea, anxiety and weight gain. The drug is also employed in the treatment of cases of mild acne in young girls.

Yaz® Birth Control Side Effects

In recent years, there have been several reports linking the drug with serious gall bladder diseases, and blood clot injuries in women.

Studies indicate that while drosperinone finds effective use in combating pregnancy, it can also interfere with the human body’s ability in regulating and maintaining the vital balance between salt and water. As a result, potassium levels in the body may be elevated leading to a condition known as hyperkalemia, which is often linked to several life-threatening problems.

Serious side effects that have been recorded following the use of Yaz® include Pulmonary Embolism (blood clot in the lungs), Deep Vein Thrombosis, heart attack, stroke, seizures, kidney diseases, hepatic adenoma and a range of painful gall bladder diseases.

Particularly, there has been mounting evidence in recent times, establishing Yaz® as a causal factor for varied painful gall bladder conditions, which often result in surgery and removal.

Symptoms indicating gall bladder diseases may include the following:

  • Pain or discomfort in the upper right side of the abdomen
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Bloating
  • Jaundice

Medical experts recommend that women avoid Yaz®, especially if they are allergic to the progestin drospirenone, or have other pre-existing medical conditions such as gall bladder complications, high blood pressure, prior heart attacks or strokes, liver and kidney diseases.

Several instances have been reported, where women have developed gall bladder complications, following exposure to Yaz® for periods as short as three months. Unfortunately, several of these complications could only be treated through surgery and removal of the gall bladder.

Yaz® Gall Bladder Disease Lawsuit

Although varied gall bladder related complications in women may be attributed to the use of Yaz®, its manufacturer, Bayer™ has continued to sell the birth control pills without making adequate warning information available to its users.

By using Yaz®, you or a friend may have potentially exposed yourselves to permanent and painful gall bladder injuries. The injuries suffered may entitle you to financial compensation, which you can claim through a Yaz Gall Bladder Disease Lawsuit.
