Stryker Hip Recall Lawsuit Leads to Settlement Program for Defective Hip Implants
Understanding the Dangers of Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants
Stryker Orthopaedics has voluntarily recalled many of its metal-on-metal hip replacement devices due to corrosion that occurs where the neck and module meet. This continual rubbing in the artificial joint has been linked to a number of problems, including:
- Pain. Patients have reported a number of problems with the Stryker device, including impingement on the nerves and blood vessels around the implant, swelling in the affected hip, stress fractures in the bones around the implant, and extreme pain as the implant burrows into the surrounding tissues. Many patients experience such severe pain that they are unable to walk, sit, or even stand.
- Device failure. As the device begins to break down, patients can suffer a noticeable squeaking in the joint, a loosening of the mechanical joint that causes the leg to suddenly “give way,” a painful dislocation of the implant in the hip socket, and fragments of the implant breaking off inside patients’ bodies.
- Metal toxicity. The Stryker hip devices were constructed with a metal neck and a metal stem, which can rub against each other in the hip socket. As the two pieces grate on one another, they may release toxic elements (including chromium and cobalt) into the tissues around the joint and into the patient’s bloodstream.
- Revision surgery. Victims are often forced to undergo a second replacement surgery to remove the defective device in favor of a more reliable implant. This process not only requires the patient to take additional time off of work for recuperation, but can result in increased medical bills, insurance problems, and painful rehabilitation.
Your Stryker Hip Recall Settlement Pays for Medical Bills, Injury Costs, and More
While every Stryker hip implant case is different, settlements are usually enough to provide a patient with reimbursement for additional surgeries and medical treatments. Patients who needed a second surgical procedure may be reimbursed $300,000 or more, depending on the facts of their case.
