The Risks of ReNu Eye Drops

ReNu® with MoistureLoc® is a solution used for cleaning, storing and moistening soft contact lenses launched in 2004. From 2005 to 2006, ReNu with MoistureLoc® contact lens solution became related with outbreaks of eye infection.

In May 2006, Bausch & Lomb, the company which produced ReNu with MoistureLoc®, voluntarily withdrew the product from worldwide markets. Time and usage have shown that it exposes users to a potentially blinding fungal infection, Fusarium Keratitis.

ReNu® with MoistureLoc® can cause Fusarium Keratitis

Fusarium Keratitis is a very serious type of eye infection, the most harmful of all Fusarium. It takes a long time to treat because the infection takes a long time to grow. If untreated, it can result in permanent eye injury such as cornea scarring. Symptoms eye pain, eye discomfort, foreign body sensation, decrease in vision and light sensitivity.

Studies showed that glue-like “biofilms” found int the the solution where contact lenses were stored allowed organisms such as Fusariam fungus to grow. Beyond thriving, these organisms also became immuned to disinfecting properties of the contact lens solution.
Experts have confirmed that ReNu® with MoistureLoc® is not effective against biofilms and the organisms living biofilms.
